Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha Essay The novel Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha has no authorial presence at all, yet the reader gains a richer understanding of the situation than Paddy or any other 10-year old could ever have. With regard to the parents break up, how does Doyle achieve this There are many factors which suggest how Doyle has succeeded in creating a ‘triangular relationship’ between himself the reader and the narrator Paddy Clarke so that the reader has a greater awareness of the predicament that Paddy is in. Doyles achievement is how he alternates the poetic and realistic without once lapsing into stream-of-self-consciousness; the only way we – as readers can tell it’s written by an adult, is by the spelling. We see the violence in Paddy’s life peripherally; Doyle tells us nothing more than what the child sees and comprehends. One of the reasons for Roddy Doyles success lies in creating a realistic and convincing character for a 10-year old child. He does this by his clever use of language, and also in how he arranges his sentences to convey deep emotion and feeling than any emotive language could: Hed hit her. Across the face; smack. Paddy cannot see this, and is wracked by confusion. This is shown a few paragraphs later: Ma was getting out of the car. It was awkward because of Catherine. I thought we were all getting out, that it had stopped raining. But it hadnt. It was lashing. We can see that Ma patience has been tested and, in her ire, she leaves the car. Conformation that Paddy does not understand is sealed when he asks Has she gone for 99s His father doesnt reply, the silence filling the void between him and Ma unbeknown to Paddy, whose innocent question remains unanswered. We are able to read between the lines, and by doing this we can detect the silent turbulence, unlike Paddy whom is the storys narrator. Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha is written in the first person, and is therefore devoid of the authorial omniscience and intrusiveness that would allow Doyle to relate to the reader. The fact that the story is set in a first-person narrative – with a bewildered 10-year old as the narrator – allows us to fill the gaps in Paddys mind, and we can connect with Doyles imagination – and in doing this he has effectively succeeded in creating a realistic world through the eyes of an imaginary child. When reading, the reader and Paddy develop a symbiotic existence, where Paddy is necessary to allow us to see, and hear and act as a viewpoint into his world, and our superior comprehension can observe the underlying tension that ultimately culminates in the parents divorce. Roddy Doyle writes potent novels, rooted in working-class experience. His first three novels, known as the Barrytown trilogy, focused on the Rabbittes, a family of eight whose lives are a mixture of high comedy, depressing poverty and domestic chaos. The novel Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha explores with remarkable subtlety the development of a small boy’s empathy, as he simultaneously masters language and discovers a new understanding of pain. Written almost entirely in dialogue, his books are full of slang, colloquialisms, and vulgarisms. In the past, Doyle’s raw portrayal of working class Ireland has received as much censure as praise in his native country. â€Å"I’ve been criticised for the bad language in my books–that I’ve given a bad image of the country,† said Doyle. New York Times Co. v. United States U.S. Supreme Court, 1971 The New York Times printed allegedly classified documents that leaked from the Pentagon about the war in Vietnam. A 47 volume classified history of the American involvement in Vietnam was distributed to the Times and, later, the Post by Daniel Ellsberg, a minor writer in the Pentagon Papers. The Times published these papers bit by bit until the Nixon administration sought an injunction on the Times to stop publication. The Supreme Court found that the First Amendment did not permit an injunction against the Times. The issue here is weather or not the First Amendment applies to federal papers, and weather prior restraint is unconstitutional. Also, can the government seek an injunction on a press to halt publication of such documents, even in cases of national security. The Supreme Court Ruled 6-3 in favor of the New York Times, saying that the First Amendment did not permit an injunction against the press. The Court found that the Government did not relieve their "Heavy Burden" of proof to justify the injunction based on prior restraint. This verdict was reached June 25, 1971. A heavy burden of proof is placed on the government whenever there is grounds for prior restraint. Is this burden is not sufficiently substantiated, then and injunction cannot be issued. The First Amendment protects the rights of individuals and the press to communicate freely. African American History and Women Timeline 1700-1799 [Previous] [Next] Women and African American History: 1700-1799 1702 New York passed a law prohibiting public gatherings by three or more enslaved Africans, prohibiting testimony in court by enslaved Africans against white colonists, and prohibiting trade with enslaved Africans. 1705 Virginia Slave Codes of 1705 were enacted by the House of Burgesses in the Colony of Virginia.   These laws more clearly delineated differences in rights for indentured servants (from Europe) and slaves of color.   The latter included enslaved Africans and Native Americans sold to colonists by other Native Americans.   The codes specifically legalized the trade in enslaved people and established rights of ownership as property rights.   The codes also prohibited the Africans, even if free, from striking white people or owning any weapons.   Many historians agree that this was a response to events, including Bacons Rebellion, where white and black servants had united. 1711 A Pennsylvania law outlawing slavery was overturned by Britains Queen Anne.New York City opened a public slave market on Wall Street. 1712 New York responded to a slave revolt that year by passing legislation targeting black and Native Americans.   The legislation authorized punishment by slave owners and authorized the death penalty for enslaved Africans convicted of murder, rape, arson or assault.   Freeing those enslaved was made more difficult by requiring a significant payment to the government and an annuity to the one freed.   1721 The colony of South Carolina limited the right of voting to free white Christian men. 1725 Pennsylvania passed  An Act for the Better Regulating of Negroes in this Province, providing more property rights to owners, limiting contact and freedom of Free Negroes and Mulattoes, and requiring a payment to the government if a slave were freed. 1735 South Carolina laws required freed slaves to leave the colony within three months or return to enslavement. 1738 Fugitive slaves establish a permanent settlement at Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, Florida. 1739 A few white citizens in Georgia petition the governor to end bringing Africans to the colony, calling enslavement a moral wrong. 1741 After trials for conspiracy to burn down New York City, 13 African American men were burned at the stake, 17 African American men were hanged, and two white men and two white women were hanged.  South Carolina passed more restrictive slave laws, permitting the killing of rebellious slaves by their owners, banning the teaching of reading and writing to enslaved people and prohibiting enslaved people from earning money or gathering in groups. 1746 Lucy Terry wrote Bars Fight, the first known poem by an African American. It was not published until after Phillis Wheatleys poems were, passed down orally until 1855.   The poem was about an Indian raid on Terrys Massachusetts town. 1753 or 1754 Phillis Wheatley born (enslaved African, poet, first published African American writer). 1762 Virginias new voting law specifies that only white men may vote. 1773 Phillis Wheatleys book of poems, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, was  published in Boston and then in England, making her the first published African American writer, and the second book by a woman to be published in the land which was about to become the United States. 1777 Vermont, establishing itself as a free republic, outlawed slavery in its constitution, allowing indentured servitude bound by their own consent.   Its this provision that grounds the claim of Vermont to be the first state in the United States to outlaw slavery. 1780 - 1781 Massachusetts, the first New England colony to legally establish slave ownership, found in a series of court cases that slavery was effectively abolished   African American men (but not women) had the right to vote. Freedom came, in fact, more slowly, including some enslaved Africans becoming indentured.
